The 1,200–2,000 sq ft band is where most whole-home wood heating happens, and where the mid-size (about 2 cu ft firebox) stove class lives. Peak outputs around 40,000–60,000 BTU/h cover a reasonably insulated home in a mixed climate; leakier or colder homes need the top of that range plus realistic expectations about the far bedrooms.

Are all of these stoves EPA certified?
Yes — every model listed is on the EPA's current certified wood heater list and meets the 2020 NSPS emission limits. Previously certified (out of production) models are excluded from rankings.
How accurate are the heated-area estimates?
They are starting points, not promises: peak certified output divided by 25–35 BTU/h per square foot, the common rule of thumb for a reasonably insulated home in a mixed climate. Poor insulation, high ceilings, cold climates, and chopped-up floor plans all shrink real coverage — the sizing calculator lets you adjust for those.
