Best Wood Stove for a Garage or Workshop
Garages and workshops are usually poorly insulated and heated intermittently, so the job is fast warm-up in a small volume rather than a 10-hour overnight burn — compact stoves shine here. Two cautions before the spec sheet: many jurisdictions and insurers have specific rules about solid-fuel stoves in garages (vehicle fuel vapors are the concern), and clearances to workbenches and stored material matter more than in a living room. Check local code first.

Purely from EPA certification data: Currently certified room heaters with peak output up to 40,000 BTU/h and a firebox of 2 cu ft or less, ranked by emission rate, then HHV efficiency. Only currently certified models (in production) are eligible. No prices, sponsorships, or affiliate considerations are involved.
Are all of these stoves EPA certified?
Yes — every model listed is on the EPA's current certified wood heater list and meets the 2020 NSPS emission limits. Previously certified (out of production) models are excluded from rankings.
How accurate are the heated-area estimates?
They are starting points, not promises: peak certified output divided by 25–35 BTU/h per square foot, the common rule of thumb for a reasonably insulated home in a mixed climate. Poor insulation, high ceilings, cold climates, and chopped-up floor plans all shrink real coverage — the sizing calculator lets you adjust for those.
